Mynydd Preseli - 6.5 miles in the Preseli hills, Pembrokeshire

So, we've just got back from a relaxing weekend in Pembrokeshire tucked away in the quaintest Under the Thatch cottage we've ever been to (and we've been to a few)! We stayed in Bluestone Barn, which is a real gem and I highly recommend booking if you're tempted to escape down West and do some walking or chilling:

So Saturday we set off to do a walk we've done before (although we did get a bit lost) and decided to share it as it has some amazing views and was a brilliant trek. North Pembrokeshire boasts some of the best scenery in West Wales - rolling lush hills and sea views all in one go. Get your walking boots on and get down there!

This was the longest walk we've done with our beagle puppy Gracie, who loved it but was suitably knackered after....(Dexter was also exhausted):

Onto the route and directions:

Mynydd Preseli
Distance: 6.5 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 2.5 hours
Details: bring waterproof walking boots & wrap up warm (it's very windy on the top), one steep climb up to Carn Menyn, boggy marshland for parts of the walk, prepare to get muddy!
Facilities: no toilets / refreshments, just open hills and breathtaking views
Dog info: dogs loved it! Open fields with plenty of space to run in but obviously livestock about so keep them under control (not that our beagles get to run off lead as this results in them running off and never coming back)!

Here's a link to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park map of this walk (we tracked it and it ended up 1 mile longer roughly so we may have gone a little bit further, but it's all good)

Here's a link to just the instructions, pure and simple if you want to print them off or save them.

Parking: Waldo's Memorial Stone

Set your SatNav to Mynachlog-Ddu. As you head towards here from Crymych, go through two 30mph signs and follow the road around to the right. Waldo's memorial stone is on your left - park here.

Here's a link to the route I tracked on endomondo:

1. Leave the car park and turn right following the road back the way you came and around to the left. You pass a bridge and a few houses and a children's play area on your right.

2. Just before the 60mph signs, turn left following the bridleway at a "Caermeini Isaf Meini Glas The Cottage" sign.

3. Follow the bridleway up over a cattle grid and bear right as you come around to another gate. Continue to follow the waymarked route for the bridleway and go through another gate.

4. The track opens up a little bit here, passing fields full of sheep on the left and some nice views back over the hills . Head straight uphill along the dirt track keeping to the left of the open field ahead.

5. Go through another gate following the blue waymarked route and continue on. You can see Carn Menyn up on the right hand side here. Go through the next gate and be prepared to get muddy, very boggy terrain in the first half of this section.

6. Head to the right up towards the rocky outcrop of Carn Menyn. There are small paths here and there or feel free to beat your own track as I did and got covered in mud in the process....

7. At the top, walk around to the left and climb up a few rocks for the best panoramic views from Carn Menyn. We stopped here for lunch and a cuppa and let the beagles recharge...enjoy the view!

8. Head back down the other side and follow the path down the hill and then back up the other side.

9. As you begin to climb, you pass more rocks on your right hand side and then Bedd Arthur on your left (a stone circle which translates as "Arthur's grave"). Keep following the path which becomes a bit less obvious in places - follow the wooden posts painted white on top to keep you on track. Again, very boggy and muddy in parts here.

10. As you descend the other side, you come to a blue waymarked arrow on a rock in a small pool. Turn left here and head back along the path.

11. Follow this route around the other side of the hill for approximately 2 miles - it comes and goes in places but is relatively easy to pick back up if you keep heading straight on.

12. Once you rejoin the road, turn left and walk back along the road until you reach the car park at Waldo's memorial.

We've only ever done this route in good weather but visibility can become poor very quick in bad conditions so please come prepared. I'd recommend having the OS map of the area and a compass although if the weather is fine you should get by with just these directions and the map linked from the national park above.

Let me know what you think of the route if you try it. Definitely one of my favourite Pembrokeshire walks so far.
