Pontardawe-Rhydyfro woodland walk through the Cwm Du - 2 miles

Pontardawe-Rhydyfro Woodland walk around the Cwm Du

Distance: 2 miles approx (I walked a slightly different route as started from my home and looped the road for a bit, I did 2.1 miles in total)
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 45 mins - 1 hour
Details: I did it in trainers but it was quite muddy and boggy in places and I got soggy feet so would recommended walking shoes/boots especially if it's been raining!
Mostly walked on road / woodland track, some gradual climbs and descents over uneven terrain.
Facilities: spar en route in Rhydyfro and shops in the village.
Dog info: I only took Gracie as a training walk, she was really good (for a change)! Lots of smells. There is a field and plenty of open space for dogs to roam off lead in.

Parking: same as the circular walk I posted for Clydach over the Baran Mountain. Park on James Street, just after you turn left at the traffic lights, park on the left hand side just as the hill begins to climb (opposite Allt-y-cham road)

Route and directions:

1. Begin the same as the Baran walk, by heading straight on up the road passing the new housing estate on your right, lots of houses, a spar on the right and then follow the road around until you come into Rhydyfro.

2. Just after entering Rhydyfro, there is a footpath signposted downhill on the left hand side of the pavement, take this route.

3. Head over the bridge and turn left to follow the footpath up a small climb until you come out in a marshy/more woodland area.

4. Ignore the stile and turn left to follow the footpath through the woods.

5. Keep going along this path for a while and go through 2 gates.

6. Follow the path through the woods climbing up and eventually it evens out and you pass a field on your right (sometimes has livestock in but was empty today).

7. Wander to the left and follow the semblance of a path back into the woods until you join a gravel track. Turn right and follow this track all the way down past the Glanrhyd plantation.

8. Head straight over towards the sign that says Cwm Du and go down the steps and over a small wooden bridge. Keep going down the steps until you come out next to the river.

9. Turn left onto the footpath (right takes you down the track and you come out into the village by the traffic lights at the cross)

10. Go right over the green bridge and turn right again and climb up the footpath. You rejoin the road back near where you started. Turn right and walk down the hill to where you parked.

This is a lovely route we often walk with the dogs as it's close to where we live. Within minutes of leaving the road it feels like you are a million miles away in a secluded woods with nothing but the leaves crunching under your feet and the river rushing alongside you.

Nothing beats a nice walk in the fresh air and I was lucky enough to have sunshine today as well!

Happy walking.
